Richard Carey, the local probate judge, puts down the
gavel (temporarily) and picks up the microphone with the release of his third
Christian rock CD: “Crossin’ O’er the Jordan”, scheduled for release this
summer. His band, “the Project”, will celebrate the release on Friday, August
10th, with a live concert sponsored by Logos Christian Bookstore. The public is invited to join the
celebration, slated for the store’s front parking area from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Bring a lawn chair, and an appetite, as
the “Java House at the Meadows” restaurant will be offering some of
their fine cuisine throughout the
evening.
“After a year in the studio, the band is pretty excited
about this release,” says Carey. “It is very high-octane, very urban. Indeed,
the CD has a very ‘live’ sound to it—as though it were recorded on the streets
of Springfield—sans the traffic. Still, this new music is rather diverse,
offering some quieter ballads amidst a number of songs heavy laden with brass
and vocal harmonies. Think of Billy Joel meeting the Saturday Night Live band.”
It is all part of a Christian music ministry started by
Carey five years ago with the release of his CD: “For the Glory of the Lord.”
“My goal was, and remains, to touch hearts through the performance of my music,
and through the sharing of stories—many of which come from my experiences in
the criminal justice system. It has proven to be a good venue for spreading the
truth and the wisdom of the Gospel message.”
The ministry has taken him around Ohio and as far away as Arizona,
Colorado, and Montana.
He often performs alone, as the band’s size is rather
formidable, usually requiring bigger venues and significant sound
equipment. Accordingly, one is not apt
to find the whole band playing a local
coffee house. Locals, however, may have
caught the band warming up the crowd at the Dayton Convention Center for the
bands, “Mercy Me” and “Audio Adrenalin”, for President George W. Bush’s visit
to Clark County, or when it was one of the featured bands of the Springfield
Summer Arts Festival. The band also enjoys stopping in to play at Word of Faith
church for its jail chaplaincy fund-raisers. “When the whole band comes
together, there is a tremendous energy which is unleashed. The people get
excited; and the band feeds off of that. It is something to experience.”
Indeed, the band is comprised of a group of talented
veterans. Jeff Sandow (bass), Doug Gibson (drums), Jeff Davis (organ), and
Jacque Harenberg (sax) have been rocking crowds since the 1970s, with bands
such as “Scram” and “NewMusic”. Pastor Jim Britton has been called the “dean”
of guitar players. The band has become known for its powerful vocal section
thanks to the voices of Troy Berry, Dan Carey—both of local theater lore— Sandy
Cochran, Lisa Carey, and new vocalist, Carolyn Kerns. And
Amanda Kincaid adds an unusual twist to the band with her haunting but
lyrical violin riffs. Richard Carey writes the music, plays the piano, and is
the lead singer and front man for the band. However, he is quick to add: “ I just count the beat and
hang on for dear life. It’s a heck-of-a ride!”
Logos Christian Bookstore will be offering the CDs for
sale beginning on August 10th. Carey hopes to have a Web cite up and
running for the band this fall.
